About the Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea

The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen is a spin on one of the luxury pen manufacturer's foundational themes. Made in cooperation with Hemingway Ltd., the Ernest Hemingway Estate, the new release is a small-bath Limited Edition. The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen is a stylistic and thematic departure from the 2016-2020 Hemingway Collection. Past Hemingway pen collections focused on Hemingway's life, but the new Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen pivots to the plot of one of the author's most iconic tales: the story of Santiago, and the plucky fisherman's epic struggle to bring a giant marlin to shore. The Old Man and the Sea was written in Cuba, and was the last volume of fiction published during Hemingway's lifetime. Many have called this literary work Hemingway's greatest work, including the author. The piece appeared in LIFE magazine's September 1, 1952 edition, and earned Hemingway the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen honors the 70th anniversary of the prestigious award with a limited number of 70 pieces.

The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen represents the main elements of Hemingway's story using lost wax casting and hand-enamelling. The pen's carved cap and blind cap symbolize Santiago's skiff in kotibé mahogany, and the enamelled segments represent the sea and sky while creating a backdrop for the pen design's centerpiece. The pen's design was inspired by early editions of the book, and the full-length sculpted pen barrel dramatizes Santiago's struggle with the marlin.

Additional detailing includes a silver fishing rod clip, sculpted trim rings, an engraved grip section, and a high-relief cap top that brandishes Hemingway's game-fishing monogram. On the lower end of the pen's barrel, translucent ocean-blue enamel reveals sculpted detailing beneath, telling the story of the ocean's currents and the sharks who torment Santiago as the fisherman tries to return to shore.

The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pen uses a piston filling mechanism, an ebonite feed, and a 6mm custom 18K gold nib. The limited edition pen is offered in either sterling silver or vermeil (24K yellow gold-plated silver). The Old Man and the Sea Limited Edition fountain pen is also available as a rollerball (in both sterling silver and vermeil).

Each of the Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea fountain pens comes with custom packaging designed for display of this uniquely collectible luxury pen with an antiqued wood replica of Santiago's boat designed to be fitted with a die-cut marlin mascot made of solid metal.

Limited Edition of 70 pens of each colorway.
